Adobe Photoshop: Changing Wheels of a Vehicle

Difficulty Level

Tools/Supplies Needed:

• Adobe Photoshop
• computer
• image

Procedure:

• first start by picking a photo you want to use for changing the rims of your vehicle
• find another image with desired rims which you would like to use
• something with the same perspective as your original image is ideal
• import the image of the rims into the original photo
• using the marque tool select a rough outline of the first rim
• then go to edit/copy and then edit/paste
• now a new layer should pop up with that copied image area
• do the exact same process above for the other wheel
• now this step is optional, but does make the process a little easier and less confusing
• label the lower layer as "base" and the rim layers as "front rim" and "rear rim"
• make the "base" layer invisible, then selected the "polygonal lasso" tool
• make sure you have the "front rim" layer selected, using the "polygonal lasso" tool to select the outer portions of the rim and delete
• make sure you have the "rear rim" layer selected, using the "polygonal lasso" tool to select the outer portions of the rim and delete
• now position both the "front rim" layer and the "rear rim" layer over top of the existing rims in your original photo
• select either the "front rim" or "rear rim" layer, go to edit/free transform, and a box with grips should pop up
• pulling the grips, size the rim accordingly
• you can also rotate image layer by clicking on the outside of the grip box and dragging
• if you need to move the layer around on the image, you can click on the inside of the grip box and drag accordingly
• move onto the other rim layer and do the same process over
• once you are satisfied with the rim size on the image, you can now slightly adjust the color to make the image slightly more realistic
• select either the "front rim" or "rear rim" layer, now double click on either layer or left click and select "blending style" on the pop up menu
• go to "outer glow" making sure you have the box check, set blend mode - normal, opacity - 75%, noise - 0, color - black, technique - softer, spread - 0, size - 24, range - 50, and jitter - 0. (values will depend on the size of your image and personal preference)
• go to "inner glow" making sure you have the box check, set blend mode - normal, opacity - 49%, noise - 0, color -black, technique - softer, spread - 0, size - 5, range - 50, and jitter - 0. (values will depend on the size of your image and personal preference)
• go to "color overlay", set blend mode - normal and opacity to 5%. (values will depend on the size of your image and personal preference)
• once you are finished with the one rim layer, you can then right click on that particular layer and a menu will pop up. Then select "copy layer style"
• next move onto the rim layer which you haven't edited yet, right click, and select "paste layer style" on the pop up window
• this will prevent you from having to go through the whole layer editing process over again and use the exact same settings as you previously set in the other layer
• once you are satisfied with your image, you are ready save and you're done

Video tutorial on how to change the wheels/rims on a vehicle in Adobe Photoshop. This was done on Adobe Photoshop version CS5 on a Mac, but this also applies to other versions of Adobe Photoshop and on the Windows version as well.
