Difficulty Level
Tools/Supplies Needed:
• heat gun
• plastic scraper
• replacement butyl tape
• rubbing alcohol/isopropyl
• degreaser
• cloths/rags
• paper towel
Procedure:
• first it is required that you remove the door panel on your vehicle
• once removed you will then have access to a vapour barrier or in this case the foam panel barrier
• if you find the one on your vehicle is damaged, these can be purchased at the dealer or auto parts suppliers
• remove the barrier completely from the vehicle
• The easiest way I've found is to heat up the existing sealant with a heat gun which will make it more pliable, then scrap it off with a body filler applicator or a plastic scraper
• you should be able to remove a majority of the sealant, there will be a light film left over
• for the left over film, use some form of degreaser which won't attack the paint and wipe it away using paper towel
• new butyl tape can be purchased at a variety of sources such as the dealer, auto parts supplier, hardware stores, online, etc.
• ensure the barrier is clean as well, these tend to be a little harder to clean than compared to the door, but you can use the same method to clean it as well
• as for applying the new butyl tape, this can be applied to the barrier or door first
• make sure the area is clean of any residue, I like to give both surfaces a wipe down with rubbing alcohol/isopropyl and a clean cloth/rag
• apply the new butyl tape
• for corners, the wax paper will need to be ripped
• push it into place and ensure it sticks
• once done, remove the wax paper and install the barrier
• place it into location, once satisfied, push it into place to ensure the perimeter is sealed
• reinstall door panel in reverse of removal
